एक बार पार्वती माता भगवान शिव – शंकर के साथ पदयात्रा पर विश्व भ्रमण के लिए निकली विश्व में अनेकों स्थान घूमने के बाद पार्वती माता थक गई और भगवान शिव से थोड़ी देर विश्राम करने को कहा। भगवान शिव ने विश्राम करने के लिए हामी भरी और दोनों एक पीपल के पेड़ के नीचे बैठ गए। थोड़ी देर बाद भगवान शिव अपनी करवट बदलकर लेट गए। लेकिन पार्वती माता की निगाहें उन चीटियों की कतार पर टिकी थी जो एक स्थान से दूसरे स्थान पर जा रही थी और चीटियों के बीच रास्ते में पढ़ा था एक रेंगने वाला कीड़ा जिसे चीटियां निरंतर काट रही थी।
कीड़ा अपनी रक्षा करने में असमर्थ था। क्योंकि चीटियां अनेक थे। कीड़ा अत्यधिक पीड़ा में था। वह अपनी रक्षा करने के लिए छटपटा रहा था। पार्वती माता यह दृश्य देख दुखी होने लगी। माता कैसे ना कैसे उस कीडे़ की पीड़ा मिटाना चाहती थी, लेकिन खुद करने में असमर्थ थी तो पार्वती माता ने कीड़े को इस समस्या से निजात दिलाने के लिए भगवान शिव से प्रार्थना की भगवान शिव ने जब खड़े होकर उस कीड़े को देखा तो उन्होंने पार्वती माता को समझाया कि इस पर अपना ध्यान मत दो यह किसी पीड़ा में नहीं अपितु अपने कर्मों का फल भोग रहा है।
लेकिन पार्वती माता अपने कोमल हृदय से इस कठोर और पीड़ादायक दृश्य को देखकर काफी दुखी थी। उन्होंने भगवान शिव से उस कीडे़ की पीड़ा मिटाने के लिए लगातार प्रार्थना की। लेकिन भगवान शिव भी उन्हें यही समझाते रहे कि इस पर ध्यान केंद्रीत तो मत करो, यह अवश्य ही अपने कर्मों का फल भोग रहा है।
भगवान शिव ने इस समस्या से छुटकारा पाने के लिए माता पार्वती को वहां से कहीं दूसरे स्थान पर चलने को कहां, ताकि उनका ध्यान वहा से हट सके। लेकिन माता पार्वती ने भी हट (जिद्द) कर रखी थी। वह बोली जब तक इसकी पीड़ा नहीं मिटेगी, मैं यहां से नहीं जाऊंगी। अब भगवान शिव को त्रीया हट के आगे मजबूर होकर उस कीडे़ की पीड़ा मिटानी पड़ी।
भगवान शिव बोले, “पार्वती ! ठीक है, मैं इसका कष्ट मिटा रहा हूं। अगर बाद में यह कुछ गड़बड़ करें तो तुम मुझे दोष मत देना।”
माता पार्वती ने कहा, “ठीक है महाराज पहले आप इसका कष्ट मिटाए।”
फिर भगवान शिव ने अपनी शक्तियों से उस कीडे़ को राजा, चीटियों को उसकी प्रजा और उनके लिए एक बहुत ही सुंदर नगरी बना दि, जिसमें राजा का आलीशान महल था।
( अब यहां से उस राजा की वास्तविकता शुरू होती है। जिस कारण उसे एक कीड़े के रूप में पीड़ा मिल रही थी )
अब जब सब कुछ बनकर तैयार हो गया था तब भगवान शिव ने राजा ( जो पहले कीड़ा था ) से कहां, “भाई अब तु अपना राज – पाठ संभाल हम चलते हैं।
लेकिन राजा अपने व्यवहार से बड़ा ही घमंडी और एक चरित्रहीन व्यक्ति निकला। उसने माता पार्वती की सुंदरता पर मोहित होकर उनका हाथ पकड़ लिया और भगवान शिव का यह कहकर अपमान किया है कि “तू एक योगी वन – वन भटकने वाला एक साधारण सा ब्राह्मण भला तेरे साथ यह सुंदर स्त्री कैसे रह सकती है ? इसकी जगह तो मेरे महल में है, जिसे मैं अपनी रानी बनाऊंगा। इतनी सुंदर स्त्री एक राजा की रानी ही बन सकती है ना कि एक साधारण से योगी की जिसे ना अपने आज का पता है ना कल का, अब मेरी बात सुन और यहां से चुपचाप चला जा। यह तो मेरी रानी बनेगी।”
भगवान शिव ने राजा को बहुत समझाने की कोशिश की और बोले, “यह मेरी पत्नी है। तू अपना राज – पाठ संभाल तुझे हजारो रूपमती मिल जाएंगी। भगवान शिव ने उसे खुब समझाने की कोशिश की लेकिन राजा अपनी जिद पर अड़िग रहा।
तो भगवान शिव ने कहां, “ठीक है राजा तुम इसे अपनी रानी बना लो। मैं चलता हूं।”
यह बात सुनते ही माता पार्वती भगवान शिव के चरणों में गिर गई और बोली, “स्वामीं आप मुझे इस दुविधा में छोड़कर कैसे जा सकते हैं ?”
भगवान शिव बोले, पार्वती ! मैंने तुम्हें पहले ही कहां था कि मैं इसका कष्ट मिटा दूंगा। लेकिन बाद में अगर यह कुछ गड़बड़ करता है तो तुम मुझे दोष मत देना।
माता पार्वती – हे नाथ मुझे क्षमा करें जो मैं कर्म सिद्धांत को नहीं पहचान सकी। अब मैं समझ गई। यह घमंडि और चरित्रहीन मानव अपने पिछले जन्म के कर्मों का फल भोग रहा था। इस कुरूर मानव ने अवश्य ही अपने जीवन में अनंत पाप किए होंगे। जिसका दंड इसे इस कीड़े के रूप में भूगतना पड़ रहा है।
भगवान शिव प्रसन्न हुए कि चाहे पार्वती ने जिद करके ही इसका कष्ट मिटा ना चाहा, परंतु अब वह कर्म सिद्धांत को समझ चुकी थी। फिर भगवान शिव ने अपनी शक्तियों से परिस्थितियां पहले जैसी कर दी। राजा को वही कीड़ा और प्रजा को वही चीटियां बनाकर उसके कर्म सिद्धांत को उसके हाल पर छोड़ दिया। अब माता पार्वती भी राजी – राजी भगवान शिव के साथ अपना भ्रमण पुन प्रारंभ करने के लिए चल पड़ी।
