जब तक्षक नाग धन्तर वैद का अंत कर नाग लोक पहुंचा तो वहां खूब जोरों – शोरों से तक्षक का स्वागत किया गया। ढोल – ताशों की ध्वनि से पूरा नाग लोक गूंज ऊठा था। प्रसन्नता से व्याकुल राजा बासिक ने अपने गले से मोतियों की माला उतार तक्षक को आदर से पहना दी और उसे विश्राम करने के लिए भेज दिया।

भूरिया नाग भी वहां बैठा – बैठा यह सारा नजारा देख रहा था और मन ही मन जल रहा था। उसने खुद से वादा किया कि….. मैं भी कुछ बड़ा कारनामा करके जरूर दिखाऊंगा। अब तक्षक नाग को तो विश्राम के लिए भेज दिया गया और उसी दौरान दूत जो पृथ्वीलोक भेजे गए थे वे भी दरबार में उपस्थित हो जाते है।

दूतो को देख राजा बासिक बोले, ‘आइए सभा में आपका स्वागत है और बताइए अपनी आंखों देखी कि तक्षक योद्धा ने कैसे बहादुरी से अपने कार्य को अंजाम दिया ?’

दूत – महाराज पहला समाचार तो यह है कि राजा पारिक ने बिटियां निहालदे और राजकुमार परीक्षित को समुद्र के बिच में कंचन महल का निर्माण कर वहां सुरक्षित रहने के लिए भेज दिया है और दूसरा यह कि तक्षक तो अपना कार्य कर वहां से निकल आए परंतु….

राजा बासिक – परंतु… क्या दूत ?

फिर दूतो ने वह सारी कहानी राजा बासिक को सुना दी जो मरते वक्त धन्तर वैद अपने शिष्यों को समझा कर गए थे।

राजा बासिक – क्या तुम सत्य कह रहे हो ? यदि ऐसा हुआ तो 1600 धन्तर वैदों की उत्पत्ति होगी, जिससे नागों का जीना दुश्वार हो जाएगा। ऐसा बिलकुल नहीं होना चाहिए और महाराज खड़े होते हुए बोले, कल सभी नाग योद्धा समय पर दरबार में उपस्थित हो जाना क्योंकि कल हम आने वाले भयंकर संकट पर मंत्रणा करेंगे।

अगले दिन सभी नाग योद्धा व मंत्री गण समय पर दरबार में एकत्रित हो जाते है। दरबार में सभी के उपस्थित होने के बाद राजा बासिक बोले, ‘सभा गणों हमारे अनुसार आप सभी जानते हैं कि इस सभा का आयोजन किस उद्देश्य से किया गया है फिर भी हम आपको याद दिलाना चाहते हैं, यदि छ: महीने बाद धन्तर वैद जीवित हो जाता है तो यह हमारे लिए बहुत दुख दायक समाचार होगा और यदि उसके सभी शिष्य धन्तर वैद बन जाते हैं तो इसका भी बहुत भयंकर परिणाम नागों को भुगतना पड़ेगा इसीलिए हम चाहते हैं कि आप कोई ऐसा उपाय खोजें कि यह दोनों ही काम सफल ना हो सके।’

दोस्तों ऐसे ही मंत्रणा करते हुए पांच महीने बीत गए किंतु किसी को कोई उपाय नहीं सुझ पा रहा था। आखिरकार राजा बासिक ने सात पान का बिड़ा फिर सभा में डाल दिया और कहां, ‘जो भी नाग योद्धा इस संकट को सुलझाएगा और परीक्षित का अंत करने में सफल होगा, उसे हम नाग लोग का आधा राज्य भेंट कर देंगे।’

भूरिया नाग को अब एक अवसर दिखने लगा था अपनी नाकामयाबी को सफलता में बदलने का अवसर। वह तुरंत अपने सिंहासन से खड़ा हुआ और सभा में पड़े बिड़े के पान को चबा गया और फुक्कार कर बोला, ‘महाराज आप सभी निश्चिंत रहिए, अब मैं कार्य को अंजाम देकर ही लौटूंगा।’ भूरिया नाग के इस साहस के कारण सभा में अब उसके लिए प्रशंसा के स्वर निकलने लगे थे।

राजा बासिक – भूरिया हमें आपसे यही आशा थी, हम जानते हैं ऐसा कोई कार्य नहीं जो आप ना कर सके।

और भूरिया नाग सभी को प्रणाम कर पृथ्वीलोक की ओर चल दिया।

वहां दूसरी तरफ धन्तर वैद के शिष्यों में मतभेद होने लगा था, अपने गुरु को लेकर उनके मन में अलग-अलग धारणाएं बनने लगी थी। एक शिष्य बोला, ‘मित्रों मुझे नहीं लगता धरती में इतने दिन दफन होने के बाद किसी का शरीर जैसे का तैसा निकले। मुझे लगता है हमारे गुरुजी का शरीर अब गल चुका होगा और हम यहां बेवकूफी से बैठे इंतजार कर रहे हैं।’

फिर क्या था आधे शिष्यों ने उसकी बात का स्वागत किया और बोले, ‘हां भाई यह ठीक कह रहा है।’ लेकिन फिर भी आधे शिष्यों का मत था कि गुरु जी अभी भी धरती में सुरक्षित हैं।’

आखिर सभी शिष्यों में समझौता हुआ कि हम सब मिलकर गुरुजी को खोदकर देखते हैं, अगर उनका शरीर सुरक्षित है तो हम उन्हें वापिस दफना देंगे और यदि शरीर गल चुका है तो हम उनका अंतिम संस्कार कर यहां से आश्रम चले जाएंगे फिर शिष्य वैदराज धन्तर की कब्र खोदने लगे। कब्र खोदने के बाद शिष्य क्या देखते हैं कि धन्तर वैद का पूरा शरीर जैसे का तैसा था किंतु उनका सर गायब था।

यह दृश्य देखकर सभी शिष्य चकित रह जाते हैं। सभी शिष्य ये समझ चुके थे कि अनजाने में उन्होंने एक ऐसी भूल की है जिसने सदा के लिए उनसे उनका गुरु छीन लिया था। वे सभी गुमसुम खड़े अपने गुरु के अचेत शरीर को निहारते रहे। सभी की आंखों से पश्चाताप के स्वर निकल रहे थे, जिन्हें दूर – दूर तक कोई सुनने वाला नहीं था। तभी उनमें से एक शिष्य ने अपनी चुप्पी तोड़ते हुए कहां, ‘यदि हम पांच की जगह छ: महीनें में खोदते तो गुरु जी का सिर भी धड़ से जुड़ जाता और वह जीवित हो उठते।’

यह बात सुन दूसरे शिष्य ने कहां, ‘अब कुछ नहीं हो सकता। अब हम सभी को गुरुजी की वह बात याद करनी चाहिए जो उन्होंने मरते वक्त हमसे कही थी, कि यदि तुम मुझे छ महीने से पहले ही निकाल लेते हो तो सभी मुझे बना कर मिल बांट कर खा लेना।’

सभी शिक्षकों ने अपना पच्चास – पच्चास का गुट बनाया और मांस आपस में बांट लिया। जब शिष्य मांस पकाने की तैयारी कर रहे थे, तभी भूरिया नाग ब्राह्मण का भेष धारण कर वहां पहुंच जाता है। एक ब्राह्मण को ढेरें में आया देख सभी शिष्य आकर ब्राह्मण को दंडवत प्रणाम करते हैं तो ब्राह्मण के भेष में भूरिया नाग बोला, ‘पुत्रों यह तुम किस प्रकार का भोजन पका रहे हो इसकी महक बहुत ही अप्रिय है।’

तब उनमें से एक शिष्य ब्राह्मण को सारी कहानी सुनादी और बोला, ‘इसीलिए हम अपने गुरू का मांस पका रहे है।’

ब्राह्मण ( भूरिया नाग ) – अरे बेवकूफों यह तुम क्या कर रहे हो ? क्या तुम नहीं जानते यदि किसी का गुरु मरता है तो उसकी आत्मा की शांति के लिए सत्संग करते हैं, हवन – पूजा करते हैं, दान- दक्षिणा देते हैं, धूम-धाम से उसका अंतिम संस्कार करते हैं और एक तुम हो कि अपने ही गुरुजी को खाने की सोच रहे हो। तुम्हें क्या लगता है इससे तुम बड़े विद्वान बन जाओगे, नहीं बल्कि तुम सभी नर्क की सजा के भागीदार बनोगे और सात जन्मो तक तुम्हारा यह पाप नहीं भूलेगा।

सभी शिष्य – ब्राह्मण देवता कृपा अब आप ही बताइए हम क्या करें ?

ब्राह्मण ( भूरिया नाग ) – अवश्य, यदि तुम इस पाप का भागीदार नहीं बनना चाहते तो इन सभी मांस के टुकड़ों को गंगा नदी में परवाह कर दो अन्यथा तुम सभी सैदव इस पाप के बोझ के नीचे दबे रहोगे।

अब सभी शिष्यों ने अपने-अपने मांस के टुकड़े उठाए और ब्राह्मण यानी भूरिया नाग के साथ गंगा नदी की ओर चल दिए……
